Scientoloccult Basics

In explaining how he came to invent Dianetics, and later Scientology, Hubbard marked his off-curriculum “experiments” at George Washington University, which he attended in 1930-32, as the beginning of his “search for life force.” He also claimed that he was “fired initially” on this search by Commander "Snake" Thompson
USN, whom Hubbard said he met in 1923 on a ship travelling between San Francisco and New York through the Panama Canal.
Although Hubbard identifies Thompson as the person who gave him his basic “education in the field of the mind,” and schooled him in “Freudian analysis,” there is a strong suggestion that Thompson was also, and more importantly, his initiator and mentor in the occult. (Ref. Lecture: Further Introduction to Dianetics)
The “experiments” Hubbard claimed he conducted at GWU had the same focus or goal as the “experiments” magicians or occultists had carried out for many years. Aleister Crowley's “primary teacher” and yoga instructor Charles Bennett had been “experimenting on a machine for registering the power of thought,” which involved a galvanometer. (Ref. Ananda Metteyya ) Scientology’s E-meter, of course, is a skin galvanometer. Crowley called occult activities and experiences “experiments,” and Hubbard in his “Admissions” called his sex magic ritual with occultist John W. Parsons a “psychic experiment.” Hubbard even called his writing of the “Admissions” an “experiment … to re-establish the ambition, willpower, desire to survive, the talent and confidence of myself.”
The life force that Hubbard “experimented” to find and measure at GWU he would call in Dianetics and Scientology “theta” and symbolize it with the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet.

ARC is a very basic term in Scientology, and certainly a concept that every Scientologist knows. They also know to use ARC to make themselves and their “technology” superior to wogs, or human beings, and the wogs’ tech. The acronym derives from Affinity, Reality and Communication, which Hubbard claimed are the components of Understanding.
Scientologists are inculcated with the “knowledge” that their understanding is superior to wogs’ understanding. The Scientologists also “know” that before Hubbard discovered ARC no wog knew these components so never really understood anything.
Hubbard's ARC triangle, which he called a “magic triangle,” is a device that operates in virtually the same way as the Rosicrucian philosophic triangle: alter one corner to cause a change in the other two corners. (Ref. A Conscious Interlude ) The alteration can produce a "positive" or a "negative" effect.

The Factors is a statement of the Universe according to Hubbard, who "humbly tendered" them to mankind in Scientology 0-8 as his "Summation of the considerations and examinations of the human spirit
and the material universe completed between A.D. 1923 and 1953."
Clearly Hubbard initially set out to sell the results of his "mental investigations" as psychotherapy rather than a reworked occult system. Removing the terms is a good way to remain hidden of course, but a close inspection of Hubbard's basic literature reveals the piece of work it really is.

TV Interview with Norbert Potthoff
on Sunday, 6 April 2008
An unofficial translation of the German transcript
[...]
Interviewer: But when you went public, weren't you afraid, I mean, Scientology has its connections too, and you're talking in a totally open and very critical manner, you say it as it is. So isn't that dangerous, can we two just chat about it with each other or ought we to be a little concerned, that there's a system there somewhere, as it's so often portrayed, that can be dangerous to us, to you? With the benefit of hindsight, did it become dangerous?
Norbert Potthoff: It was tried, I myself...
Interviewer:For example?
Norbert Potthoff: Right at the start there were murder threats against my landlord. That led to…
Interviewer: Murder threats?
Norbert Potthoff: Murder threats. Against the children, against the landlord. That led to – for four years I had been living on a farm – that I had to leave that farm. So I lost my livelihood once more. I had to start again from the beginning. With scarce financial means, a giant mountain of debts from my Scientology time that was quite frightening and that is also what the Scientologists aim at: to intimidate you in such a way that you tell yourself: "No, I'd rather leave it; keep your mouth shut and live on in peace." But now two things come into the play: For one another recourse to 1968, that I knew: with totalitarian fascist systems you must be brave. You must not kneel. And, the other point was – it may sound a little pathetic, but I was strengthened in faith, and because of that I also had the courage to testify. That made me also so strong that I went to the stage time after time.

DW-World.de: New German Films Aim to Shed Light on Scientology |
|
Luring Them In
|
Film companies in Germany are now making attempts to look behind what
they believe is the true nature of Scientology. The movies are
primarily aimed at young people, who are most likely to fall for the
organization.
Young people tend to be the first to fall for Scientology and are therefore much courted
by the group's scouts across the nation. This is where a new, 25-minute
film by the Matthias Film company comes in. It shows interviews with
Scientology leaders, former members who have turned their backs on the
organization and representatives of state authorities.
The film aims to
inform young people about the objectives and policies of Scientology,
which does not have the status of a religious organization in Germany.
It is under the surveillance of intelligence officers, because
Scientology leaders are believed to work against the country's free
democratic order. Currently, the sect has between 5,000 and 6,000
members in Germany.

Interview with Thomas Gandow in 3sat TV with Gerd Scobel
Transcript of a TV Interview from 15. 1. 2007 in 3sat Kulturzeit
An unofficial translation from the German
Interview with Thomas Gandow
Interviewer: Before the show I had the opportunity to speak with Thomas Gandow. He is responsible for the subject of cults within the protestant church in Berlin-Brandenburg, he's a Scientology expert and he's heading the Centre for Dialogue in Berlin. In a litigation before the district court of Brandenburg the [german section of the] Church of Scientology admitted to having observed the Cult Commissioner.
Good evening, Mr. Gandow!
Thomas Gandow: Good evening.
I: You were observed by Scientology. How did this come about?
TG: For eight months I provided a hiding place for an Ex-Scientologist
and his Spouse who were preparing for a litigation, they had to take part in in the US and they are being persecuted by Scientology, because Scientology wants to prevent them from relaying their experiences with this organization.
