Battle for the Mind
A Physiology of Conversion and Brainwashing

William Sargant
For an ex cult member, especially just coming out of scientology, I found this was an extremely difficult book to read. Having got through it I found that it rewarded my effort immensely. The approach to the material presented in the book is from a completely physiological viewpoint. It opens with a discussion of Pavlov's experiments with dogs. It then compares the results obtained with dogs to what happens with people under traumatic circumstances. This perspective is applied to thought reform and conversion practiced by religious leaders and in primitive rites, such as those associated with voodoo practitioners. Of particular interest to one coming out of scientology is the material dealing with abreactive therapy as used on soldiers to treat their post traumatic stress during World War I. When I read some of that material I had to check the cover of the book to make sure I wasn't reading Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. In my opinion any person who is a former cult member, especially former members of scientology, should read this book. I think they will find it to be extremely therapeutic. — Wieber

Combatting Cult Mind Control
Steven Hassan
This is the first book I read after I got out of scientology. (I had read Barefaced Messiah before that but, though away, I was still in when I started reading it.) At its core this is a handbook for getting people out of cults. Steven Hassan starts with a brief story of his experience as a "moonie," a member of the unification "church." This is followed with a brief description of what makes an organization a cult, along with the steps a person goes through as a cult captures them. The major part of the book gives information on intervention strategies that are to be used to get someone out of a cult. One very common characteristic of cults involves what has been termed shunning or disconnection. There is advice in this book about the attitude to take with a friend or family member, in a cult, to avoid being cut off from them while still working to intervene to get them out. Hassan gives pointers on what to say and, more importantly, what not to say to a person who is in a cult where there is a desire to get them out. I consider this book as a companion to Steven Hassan's other book, Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves. In my opinion these two books are essential reading for those who have a friend or family member in a cult or for those who have been in a cult and are now out. — Wieber
