Medical Claims
Hubbard claims that for some, there exists something before the start of time in this universe.Gives the rule that if there is charge on it (i.e., if the E-meter reacts on the subject) just run it, without evaluating the truth of the experience and without regard  to religious beliefs about heaven, hell or how many lives one has. Admits that what is being addressed in session is not past lives but is rather instincts and impulses; claims that this is what gets results; gives examples of the types of results to be gotten with Dianetics, such as curing complete paralysis, making useful citizens out of alcoholics, making the lame walk and the blind see.
The funny part of it is that there is evidently, at least on some cases, something earlier than the beginning of track. Back there you will find there may be charge on some sort of an ejection from another universe. I don’t care how you evaluate this or anything else: If it is there and if it has got charge on it, run it.

And that is why you ought to be using a psychogalvanometer, because it will tell you where the charge is on the case and whether or not you ought to run the thing. You can fool around with this case for just dozens of hours, perhaps, without a meter, and you won’t know what you are doing. It is something like an old-time photographer who took a lot of pride in being able to go out and squint one eye at the sun and say, "Well, I guess I set her at 4.5 f6 a fiftieth of a second," and he would shoot a picture. Well, it’s a funny thing that they invented light meters. Light meters sell like hotcakes. And the old-time photographer feels very clever about this, but he does not get the pictures of a modern professional who uses a Weston meter. And this is the difference between an auditor without a psychogalvanometer and an auditor with one. If you find charge when you ask the preclear "Is there anything before the beginning of time?" and he says yes and he tells you about it, you just run it out. Don’t sit there and argue about religion with him or something of the sort; just run it out and he will be a happier preclear.

Now, same way with the Helper, same way with the Grim Weeper, same way with overt acts as a monkey or an ape or a sloth; overt acts as Neanderthal — women he has choked, horses he has ridden to death, men he has stabbed, babies he has stepped on — it doesn’t matter: If there is charge on it, run it. That should be your byword. And if it is not your byword, you go on down the street and practice Christian Science or something. Because we have got to get results in Dianetics; that is all we want. We want well people!

Now, it may give you a little bit of trouble explaining it to little Bessie Ann’s mother — Bessie Ann being twelve — and you have just gotten through auditing her out of polio paralysis. She was walking, maybe, on crutches before you got hold of her and you have audited her out of polio paralysis, and she goes home and  she says to Mama, "Mama, you know it’s a funny thing, but I lived before." And Mama says, "Oh no, that’s just nonsense, Bessie Ann. Nobody ever lived before. It says right there on that church bulletin board that there is only one life, and you go to heaven or hell afterwards."

Well, that may be commercial for the church but it is not getting results for a Dianetic auditor. Now, anybody in the field that is saying "past lives" and so forth is just shooting the breeze. We are not running past lives; we are running facsimiles. We are not even running pre-existences. We are just running instincts and impulses, and whatever the preclear gets, that goes, because these things get results.

Now, you are in Dianetics to make people well; I have to assume that. If you are in Dianetics, you should be making people well; I am assuming that. This world is pretty sick; we don’t have to assume that, it’s obvious. You get back to your hometown, with or without your teammates, and you start taking on cases that medical science has never been able to touch — you know, such as cases with a common cold, cases of hangnails and cases of mumps and anything else. It doesn’t matter; medical science has never been able to touch them. You take on those cases and you are going to be doing just fine. People are going to come around and see you. But the most important thing is, supposing you start taking on cases that are paralyzed — complete — and all of a sudden they are walking again. Well, you may have to do some explaining. You may have to get right down and just grovel and explain why it is and apologize, what you had to do to get this person walking again.

Yes, you will not! If you make people walk and if you make the blind see and if you straighten out lives that nobody else could touch, if you take alcoholics that have been a liability to society and themselves and everything else nearly all their lives and all of a sudden they are useful citizens, you don’t have to apologize to anybody! In other words, you don’t need any approval to survive. On the contrary, people are asking you for a right to survive.

DMSMH: Claims about Clears and Memory PDF Print E-mail
Auditing Claims
Hubbard gives a synopsis of Dianetics in the June 1981 paperback edition of DMSMH. In that synopsis, he claimed that Dianetics is an exact science that produces Clears who have perfect memories. He defined also an interim state called Release, and compared this favorably against the product of psychoanalysis. He discussed the reverie used in Dianetics and claimed that Dianetics is not hypnosis.
Dianetics is actually a family of sciences embracing the various humanities and
translating them into usefully precise definitions. The present volume deals with Individual Dianetics and is a handbook containing the necessary skills both for the handling of interpersonal relations and the treatment of the mind. With the techniques presented in this handbook the psychiatrist, psycho-analyst and intelligent layman can successfully and invariably treat all psycho-somatic ills and inorganic aberrations. More importantly, the skills offered in this handbook will produce the dianetic clear, an optimum individual with intelligence considerably greater than the current normal, or the dianetic release, an individual who has been freed from his major anxieties or illnesses. The release can be done in less than twenty hours of work and is a state superior to any produced by several years of psychoanalysis, since the release will not release.

Dianetics is an exact science and its application is on the order of, but simpler than,
engineering. Its axioms should not be confused with theories since they demonstrably exist as natural laws hitherto undiscovered. Man has known many portions of dianetics in the past thousands of years, but the data was not evaluated for importance, was not organized into a body of precise knowledge. In addition to things known, if not evaluated, dianetics includes a large number of new discoveries of its own about thought and the mind.

[...]

Dianetic therapy may be briefly stated. Dianetics deletes all the pain from a lifetime. When this pain is erased in the engram bank and refiled as memory and experience in the memory banks, all aberrations and psycho-somatic illnesses vanish, the dynamics are entirely rehabilitated and the physical and mental being regenerate. Dianetics leaves an individual full memory but without pain. Exhaustive tests have demonstrated that hidden pain is not a necessity but is invariably and always a liability to the health, skill, happiness and survival potential of the individual. It has no survival value.

The method which is used to refile pain is another discovery. Man has unknowingly possessed another process of remembering of which he has not been cognizant. Here and there a few have known about it and used it without realizing what they did or that they did something which Man as a whole did not know could be done. This process is returning. Wide awake and without drugs an individual can return to any period of his entire life providing his passage is not blocked by engrams. Dianetics developed techniques for circumventing these blocks and reducing them from the status of Powerful Unknown to useful memory.

The technique of therapy is done in what is called a dianetic reverie. The individual undergoing this process sits or lies in a quiet room accompanied by a friend or professional therapist who acts as auditor. The auditor directs the attention of the patient to the patient’s self and then begins to place the patient in various periods of the patient’s life merely by telling him to go there rather than remember.

All therapy is done, not by remembering or associating, but by travel on the time track. Every human being has a time track. It begins with life and it ends with death. It is a sequence of events complete from portal to portal as recorded.

The conscious mind, in dianetics, is called by the somewhat more precise term of analytical mind. The analytical mind consists of the “I” (the center of awareness), all computational ability of the individual, and the standard memory banks which are filled with all past perceptions of the individual, awake or normally asleep (all material which is not engramic). No data are missing from these standard banks, all are there, barring physical organic defects, in full motion, color, sound, tactile, smell and all other senses. The “I” may not be able to reach his standard banks because of reactive data which bar portions of the standard banks from the view of “I.” Cleared, “I” is able to reach all moments of his lifetime without exertion or discomfort and perceive all he has ever sensed, recalling them in full motion, color, sound, tone and other senses. The completeness and profusion of data in the standard banks is a discovery of dianetics, and the significance of such recalls is yet another discovery.

The auditor directs the travel of “I” along the patient’s time track. The patient knows everything which is taking place, is in full control of himself, and is able to bring himself to the present whenever he likes. No hypnotism or other means are used. Man may not have known he could do this but it is simple.

[...]

In a clear, full memory exists throughout the lifetime, with the additional bonus that he has photographic recall in color, motion, sound, etc., as well as optimum computational ability.

The psycho-somatic illnesses of the release are reduced, ordinarily, to a level where  they do not thereafter trouble him. In a clear, psycho-somatic illness has become non-existent and will not return since its actual source is nullified permanently.

The dianetic release is comparable to a current normal or above. The dianetic clear is to current normal individual as the current normal is to the severely insane.

Successes

"The test revealed no cancer cells, it had gone into remission!!"

"My dad was diagnosed 2 months ago with prostate cancer. The medicos wanted him to go through radiation and/or surgery to handle it. My dad was not willing to do that.

"I knew that I had to act right away. I am at Flag and went Clear 2 months ago and I am staying here until I am on OT VII.

"When I initially found out about my dad's cancer, I thought I needed to go home and help him. Then (with the power of the tech) I realized I could help him while staying at Flag. I researched and found all kinds of LRH data on cancer. I then pulled out the Washington Congress on Anti-Radiation & Confront and found the lecture called "Confrontingness". Ron goes over a process he runs on guys to heal their illnesses like cancer. He also went over data on Niacin and how it can help.

"I called my dad right then and ran the process over the phone, it went amazing!!

"I also gave him LRH's data on Niacin. He immediately started taking it daily. I knew it wasn't enough, so I hard sold him on going into the Org and getting on course. The next day he routed onto his first step on The Bridge at the Org, the Overcoming Ups and Downs in Life Course.

"Two weeks after I had done the process on my dad, he called me at Flag and told me he had the craziest dream the night before, he actually saw his cancer cells splitting and leaving the body.

"Weeks later, my dad had a test done to see where the cancer level was, he received the result 5 days later with the medicos dumbfounded. The test revealed no cancer cells, it had gone into remission!! The medicos had never seen anything like this before! They had no idea why and as I stated to my dad, 'Ron knows why!!', my dad replied, 'You are right!!'

"I know LRH tech produces miracles everyday like this! It really does save lives! My dad is proof!!" -J.H.

Claims about L. Ron Hubbard
Hubbard discusses the origins of Dianetics and Scientology, and claims a direct connection to Sigmund Freud through his friend, mentor and supposedly analyst, Commander Joseph Cheesman Thompson.  Hubbard attributes his definition of transference to Thompson. Claims he has "bettered the results of Freud."
It is necessary to understand first that we are actually indebted to psychoanalysis and its originator, the debarred doctor, Sigmund Freud. My basic, if unappreciated, education in the field of the mind came from Commander Thompson of the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy, who was Freud’s personal student. Better than others, then, some sixty-two years after Freud’s original declarations, I could be considered qualified to criticize the failure of not only the basic work of Freud but the later offshoots which, while following his original tenets, yet sought to expand information on psychoanalysis. Very few living analysts today have as direct a connection with the subject as I do and there are few who can boast of the successes with the subject which I can. For I have used psychoanalysis as a practitioner and have achieved some certain  successes with it, were one to call a success the sporadic eradication of the severe neurosis in a known mental patient. Further, there is my own enfranchisement by the Freudians when they were all but obliterated in Europe by Russia.

Having established then my possible qualifications to criticize and having compounded such right by having bettered the results of Freud, I feel it is necessary to overhaul rapidly the points of failure of psychoanalysis as we understand the mind today.

[...]
TRANSFERENCE

We find another error in psychoanalysis under the heading of “transference.” The actual definition of “transference” in psychoanalysis is sufficiently unstable to bring about considerable argument as to what is meant by transference. In fact, in Dianetics we had to reestablish an entirely different condition which we called “valences” to denote the shift from one’s own personality into that of another.

Transference in psychoanalysis was used to denote the transference of the patient into the valence of the practitioner. This was the way which Commander Thompson described the phenomenon to me and nothing has been learnt from later analysts to disprove this basic definition of Freud’s.
