But you’re not in the business of justice with a Security Check, is all I’m trying to impress you with. You’re not in the business of justice, you are totally and completely in the business of straightening somebody out. Now, if you later on are in the business of justice, you have to reconcile with your fact you’ve used an auditing confidence or something that you forced the fellow to give you. And if you use this later on, wearing some other hat, well, you just have to reconcile it somehow or another, or figure out whether you should or shouldn’t. But it would be while wearing another hat that something like this occurred, don’t you see?

The only thing which can pierce sixteen inch armor plate is a symbol. A bullet is not, accurately speaking, a symbol. All a bullet is, is some mass. Now, it can be mass with meaning. It could be a silver bullet, but just a bullet is just a mass. You could set it up and say, now this is a symbol of war and discuss it and give meaning to it. As long you use it actively and expend it, create it and expend it and locate it and fix it, it’s not a symbol. It’s just mass. See that? It’s a piece of energy.

But now let’s take the letters "a" and put it in printers ink. All right now, let’s take another symbol, we’ll call it police. It’s a word isn’t it? That’s all it is, a word. All right, we take this word and we garb it in energy, we give it an ideal, we make it mobile and we get it lost and then we don’t know where it is, and the next thing you know, it’s after us. You see that about police?

You don’t for a moment… now, let’s take, let’s take somebody who’s present here. This person has been trained in judo. He is really an expert in judo. He is very good with a Colt pistol, extremely good with a Colt pistol. His alertness is good and his reaction time is much better than normal. All right! Will you please tell me why this person should be afraid of a police officer? A police officer is seldom a good shot, is poorly, if at all, trained in judo and has reaction time which is mostly fat. And yet if a police officer walked in the door and said, come down to the jail with me and lose two days, this fellow would probably go along with him.

Why? Why? It’s nonsensical. Well, it’s because the individual here has a symbol called police. Well now let’s suppose this individual didn’t have a symbol called police and didn’t know the meaning of police, and had no further significance to police and some character in a uniform walked in the door and flourished a gun on him – hah, he’d just bury the guy that walked in at the door, that’s all. You see that?

Life would be awfully simple, wouldn’t it, if we didn’t have a symbol. It would be simple, direct and without a long time lag because the only real trouble with police is, if he killed this fellow, then some more police would come tomorrow, he thinks, according to the symbol. Actually they might not, they might say, we better not arrest that fellow.

You see whither we are going with this thing called symbol. It’s an embrasive idea and it gets fixed in mass and because it’s mass and a thetan is often hungry for energy, he will pick up one of these things and because he objects to their confounded mobility, he will try to hold one still and after that, having resisted it, he will become it.

A body could be said to be a symbol. It’s mobile, it’s an idea, it’s fixed in mass, and we find, strangely enough, that a thetan who believes he’s a body has already adopted a great number of ethics, ideals, and otherwise, and fixations and arbitraries, and when we start to process him, we exteriorize him and he says, „I’m not a body.“ Hah! And what do you know, you shed at that moment an enormous number of the arbitraries which have been holding him into a persistence in life and denying him livingness. He hasn’t any action or anything else as long as this takes place. He’s fluidity.

First and foremost, you have to be in communication with the person.  So you've got processes which get you into communication with him. That's right. There are processes. I just gave you one. They got too much, so you give them more. They haven't got anything and they don't want anything - take it away.
 
 All right, a person will be sitting up on the ceiling grinning at you ghoulishly, with a head the size of a tennis ball, screaming the glee of insanity and five minutes before this you were talking to her; she's a perfectly sane girl. Completely sane, sober, conscientious, polite. A little bit.. well - but polite. A good wife, good mother. Good normal homo sapiens.

And you, all of a sudden, said, "Well, all right. Put out a beam and push your forehead two feet forward."
 
And she suddenly screams with laughter and plasters herself up against the ceiling and sits up there and says, "Heh-heh-heh-heh! Try and get me down now! Heh-heh-heh-heh!"
 
And you say, "That.. well, that wasn't in any of the lectures." There will be situations that aren't in any of the lectures. I would hate for you to go out and be calm as an oyster all the time. If I.. if I.. if I thought for a moment that I was the only one who was going to have to do any worrying in the preparation of Scientology, I'd feel very bad. I want you to do some worrying too.
 
 So I could tell you that there's all sorts of things liable to happen. Sometimes it isn't a thetan. Hmmmmmmmm. Sometimes what comes out of the head - ummmmmmmmmm.
 
No, no, I'd better... I'd better make it straight. It's always a thetan that comes out of the head. But sometimes he sure doesn't bear any resemblance to himself. Nice girl - she's sitting there on the ceiling. What am I going to do? Let's see. It costs, I think, 25 pounds a minute to call London, and uh.. Ron's in london. He couldn't process this girl for an hour over the phone. Do I.. even if I did get somebody to process her over the phone, would I hold the phone up to her on the ceiling or hold it..."
 
So, no. Just uh.. whatever they're doing, get some more of it. And remember such factors as glee of insanity.. irresponsibility, irresponsibility, irresponsibility. You can get very.. you can use old processes if you want to. "Get the beautiful sadness of being responsible for everything on earth. Now get the beautiful sadness of having this beautiful tomb for having been responsible for everything on earth." "Yes,
 yes." They can get that. "Boy!" they say, "that's phoney."
 
 You say, "Get uh.. run Rising Scale on the beauties of uh.. being somewhere else." But whatever you do, do something and do something effective. Action is always superior to inaction. 

So uh.. if you lost your nerve at any one of these points and you do get a preclear all fouled up and you find out that he was sitting on the 20th Century Limited tracks and the train came by and ran over him and the body dies there, and so forth, just report it honestly to the police exactly what happened: The person died of heart failure - and you were having a quiet social chat with him and afternoon tea.
 
Actually, there's no danger in that happening. The body keeps on running — much...

The problem of accessibility lies in your hands, with your skill and persuasiveness in getting  somebody to either look at you, sit down, answer a few questions, or at the optimum close his eyes and go straight into work.

Don’t try to force a patient into therapy. In the first place, the patient may be very resistant toward the idea that he isn’t all right. You will discover that you have an ally, for instance, in the police. Let’s say we are picking up somebody from the city jail and we are going to check him over. You will also find relatives occasionally will bring somebody around. Maybe they know the judge and if they can prove the patient is not quite sane but can be repaired, perhaps he will be let off.¹ The patient, however, arrives on your doorstep completely closed down as far as you are concerned.

It is up to you then to ally yourself with the patient to turn against his enemy, and the mere fact of turning against his enemy is usually enough to make you an ally of the patient. That very definitely increases accessibility, particularly if you put it on the line of, “Well now, let’s find out what they’ve been doing to you. Let’s really get the goods on these people.” And the first thing you know the person will be working with you. You cannot work very long against a person.
