Scientologists and their academic collaborators call Scientology's "Applied Scholastics" and similar programs "secular," deny the Scientology organization's control, and often even deny any relation to Scientology. See for example, this 2007 media article.

The claim of secularity and the denial of Scientology's control are patently false. Although Hubbard's banal and trance-inducing study procedures can be used reading comic books or any writings, in utilizing the "technology " all students come under the governance of the Scientology hierarchy, ultimately and particularly Religious Technology Center. RTC licenses and controls the Scientology entities that license and control all Scientology's front groups. David Miscavige is Scientology's dictator and runs the global enterprise as head of the Sea Organization and Chairman of RTC's Board of Directors. The ethics technology that invariably accompanies study tech is used for conversion and control, at Miscavige's pleasure.

Scientology says they are at war with the "reactive mind," the "unconscious" mind Hubbard discovered with his "scientific" research, and the mind that gets "erased" with Dianetics processing. Because of the reactive mind's intrinsic antipathy toward exposure (by Scientology and Scientologists) the battle is to appeal to the part of the person that is not opposed to Scientology.

The character of the so-called reactive mind justifies Scientology's deceptive dissemination practice.
